It Makes Sense to Me

Tonight I have big designs on making vegetarian chili.  I realize that it’s August and so it’s stupid to make chili but I have an inordinate amount of beans in my pantry that have started to annoy me.  We are also trying to cut back on eating meat where we can and as a result end up eating things that I couldn’t pronounce until about 6 months ago (“quinoa”, a-holes, not “beans”. I can pronounce “beans”.).

So maybe you’re wondering why, introducing a post about chili, there is a photo of my bathroom.  Get your minds out of the gutters, just because this meal is bean-centric, doesn’t mean that this is that sort of blog.  I’m not much for toilet humor (unless I’m reading the New Yorker on the toilet and enjoying the cartoons).  I digress.

If you squint, you can see the scribble on the mirror.  As I mentioned in the “about me” section, I can be a bit forgetful, and to remedy this, I have come up with systems.  One such system is leaving myself notes on the bathroom mirror with a dry erase marker.  It is useful and sometimes it can be fun to draw mustaches too so you can see what you’d look like with facial hair or a unibrow.

If you can’t make it out, here’s what the mirror says:

Dried beans require some forethought and since I lack the prudence at times to remember these things on my own, I make notes.  And I am sure to be very polite when I do so, not wanting to piss myself off by writing rude remarks on my mirror.

Lounging in the kitchen like two bathtubs in a Cialis commercial are a couple bowls of beans soaking–kidney beans and black beans to be exact.  And I think I’m probably going to throw in some black-eyed peas that I’ve soaked (even though I’m never really sure if I am supposed to soak them).  I am an equal-opportunity soaker and so the peas have been bathing for a while with their cousins.  I also want to see about working some beer into this chili, along with some jalapenos from the garden and perhaps even some whole wheat couscous or quinoa if I need to thicken things up a bit.  I’ll report back tomorrow about the process and the results.

Meanwhile, try to get to sleep tonight if you can, what with the excitement and all.
